LITTLE TEDDY RECORDINGS

Little Teddy Recordings is a Munich / Germany based indie label
dedicated to the international pop underground. Big Teddy &
Little Teddy (Great Britain, 1916) were an inseparable pair who
appeared in stories written by Mrs H. C. Craddock in the years
between the two World Wars and were very popular with young
readers. Little Teddy has the distinction of being the only literary
bear to have some of his limbs missing. The label was
established in November 1991 by Andy Freiberger and Armin
Kasper as a platform for their now defunct band The Bartlebees.
Almost 150 releases on the meter we're slowly but surely
approaching the 20th anniversary barrier. Looking back on a
reasonable amount of influential debut releases from the likes of
Tullycraft, The Legends, Pete & The Pirates or Stereo Total
amongst others, the 2010 roster includes new releases by The
Wave Pictures, Pete & The Pirates, Sonofold, Ezra Furman & The
Harpoons, LR Rockets and The Go-Betweens just to name a few.
May the honeywell never run dry!

"urinal heap“ and i reckon it`s their best yet so we just had to have a chat with ian at damaged goods to go for a vinyl edition. BiTe045LP 241005

this is the bats: the jangly rock band from new zealand, part of the new zealand bands that were tagged with the kiwi-rock sound amongst other contemporaries the clean and the chills. the bats have gone on to influence many a band. they even have a greatest hits album! robert scott, malcolm grant, paul kean, kaye woodward - 1 line-up; 23 years; 6 albums; 4 world tours and a new album ``the bats at the national grid^ on its way. from the band that brought you the legendary albums ``daddy^s highway^ and ``silverbeet^ and after ten years something sparks up when the bats get together to play. from a mantric like pick and strum of a chord from robert, add bouncing bass with twist from paul, a melodic hook from kaye on guitar and malcolm on a beat that just makes you want to move and dance. the combination of musical ingredients works perfectly - effortlessly. it^s been like that for 23 years now and the magic doesn^t seem to be fading. that is the essence - apply that magic to robert^s endless creative outpouring of songs and a recent late blooming from the pen of kaye woodward and you get a fine new albums worth of tunes from the bats in 2005. the bats have spent more than a decade forging a reputation based on their excellent song writing and reliably buoyant pop performances. on record, they often appear as modern day pastoral musicians, revealing the charms of their music and words in gentle pop epiphanies, while their live performances have gathered acclaim for the energy that the group`s insistently strummy rock instills in crowds. recording all started at ``the national grid``, john kelcher^s studio in christchurch, new zealand where they did the initial session pretty much live to analogue multi track tape. this was then digitised and transferred to a trusty mac for overdubbing, editing and mixing at paul and kaye^s home studio in christchurch. alastair gailbraith, who last featured on the bats ``law of things``, has added his distinctive eclectic electric violin to some tracks. Blank TapesDaydreams
the newest and should we say most mature full-length from the cheerfully prolific matt adams, who taps record on a four- track just like a-ringing’ a bell. daydreams is a double-digital release merging the super-bright melodies of wounded arch- pop writers like dave davies (the soulful kink) and chris bell (the soulful star) and roky erickson (the soulful-est ever) with the fur-and-fuzz aesthetic of bedside tapers like robert pollard and robert pollard’s favorite songwriter bill fox. these are the songs you are sure you’ll write one day when you finish listening to your first beatles lp and first start to pick up a guitar—natural, humble, personal and untouched by any taming influence besides than the hand of the man who wrote them. Blank TapesLandfair
sophomore effort from the semi-nomadic matt adams, culled from home sessions at the opposite ends of california. here we find the man in slightly softer mode, country-westerning his already impeccable pop songs for a muswell hillbillies-by-way- of-lou reed’s “rock ‘n’ roll” double album. (and was this the era when he was sneaking in a cover of “lodi”?) the songs just fall out of this guy with the slightest shake—chorus spilling over killer chorus and heartbreaker open-chord drop-outs like the raspberries used to do to make the kids in the front row sigh. he’d be at home writing and singing in any of the last five decades but you’ve got him right now, so don’t wait for the 2010s to have to come explain this back to you. Blind BatsWaiting For The Summer
lite708 blind bats - waiting for the summer ep they`re playing my favourite songs all night - i`m down on the floor, it`s all right.. i always liked girl bands and this norwegian five piece consists of four beautiful sweeties so we just had to ask them for an ep. they seemed to like the idea and came up with three great pop tunes that you can find on this little seven incher here. as the story tells there were a lot of weird things happening during the recording sessions so if you wanna know more check out their homepage. the ep came out in august 1993, and incapable of perfect timing, the blind bats had titled their early autumn release "waiting for the summer". nevertheless, the band again got some very nice reviews, especially in foreign fanzines. apart from the song "waiting for the summer", which was written by tuesday and vibeke, the 45 also included another up- beat tuesday/vibeke collaboration; "killing time", the lyrics written after a "particularly fine night on the town" according to tuesday, and "fall", a melancholic ballad penned by vibeke. this couldn`t be the end so we just decided to do another cooperation with the girl that came to be an album called "pop the question" (bite005lp) side a: 1. waiting for the summer 2. killing time side b: 1. fall Little Teddy 270107

BricolageTurn U Over / Night Falls
bricolage started playing live in some of glasgow’s seamier environs at the tail-end of 2005, perfecting their louche and stylish postcard / vic godard-influenced uplifting pop over the early months of 2006. by the summer of 2006, the band had played live with an eclectic array of artists (including fire engines, long blondes, sun ra’s arkestra) and released their very well-received debut single, footsteps, on esteemed lanarkshire subversive pop label creeping bent. 2007 saw lots of touring, including dates with franz ferdinand, 1990s and vic godard & the subway sect, and the release of two more singles, looting takes the waiting out of wanting and the waltzers on fantastic plastic and memphis industries. turn u over is taken from bricolage`s eponymous debut album to be released on slumberland in february 2009. it`s a fresh and brilliant slice of modern pop that simultaneously recalls the sound of young scotland thrills of orange juice and a more classic strain of 70s power-pop. bursting with catchy melodies and chunky guitars, it`s a perfect taster for one of the great pop records of 2009. ``night falls with vertigo`` here sees vinyl for the first time, and its glam-tinged rush marks this as no mere b-side. quality timeless pop is the game here, and bricolage are rapidly making a reputation for themselves as a band to keep your ears open for. Das WanderlustHorses For Courses
das wanderlust`s debut album has certainly been a long time coming. given the numerous line-up changes, false starts, let downs, broken vehicles and an almost terminal lack of cash (the band`s only dalliance with a `proper` label being a fairly disasterous and short-lived fling with fierce panda, for whom this album was originally recorded back in 2007) its a minor miracle `horses for courses` even exists, let alone that its finally set to see the light of day. even more miraculous is that not only have das wanderlust managed to survive - they can now boast of having a stable line-up for over a year, and close to 100 gigs around the uk & europe - but that they have somehow managed to produce a debut album so breathtaking in its scope, originality, and sheer song-writing brilliance that some critics are already calling it `the finest debut album we`ve never heard`. the music itself is hard to classify other than that it is most definitely pop of some sort, albeit a particularly wonky, everything-including-kitchen-sink sub-variety. despite what the nme say it is most definitely nothing to do with riot grrrl, being closer in spirit to experimental pop artists such as the fiery furnaces, deerhoof, and anyone else with a blatant disregard for conventional song structure and a penchant for making music with whatever they happen have to hand (as well as the standard guitar/drums/keyboard set-up, the album also features bass clarinets, flutes, saxophones, kitchen utensils, birdsong, and so on). bite051 four volts - triple your work force lp *** side a: 1. didn`t you used to be invisible? * 2. heartworm (ooh ooh song) * 3. bedlam on the beat * 4. mary said * 5. andy likes his gravy * 6. i`m not a psyche-o-path * 7. rearrange me * 8. she muddied the water * side b: 1. outpost * 2. way in * 3. hat trick * 4. sunday night * 5. anna the marigold (lp only) *** cd extra: video for "heartworm" +++ this brooklyn quartet began life under the moniker bunsen honeydew. after three singles, the loss of their original drummer, and a call from the lawyers, they reconvened under four volts. as befits a band who found inspiration in a muppet, four volts sound extremely spirited, sometimes goofy, and pretty hilarious. on their full-length debut, triple your work force, they play pop songs in a punk manner: loud, brash, and often sloppy, closer to the wildness of animal than the scientist`s bumbling nerdiness. that doesn`t make them unique, but their relentless energy and sense of fun serve them much better than an undue emphasis on innovation. triple your work force displays the band`s penchant for rowdy verses and big choruses: "didn`t you used to be invisible?" kicks the album off with a pogoing beat closer to big audio dynamite than the clash. "rearranged" is their frenetic explosion of 70s new york punk. "mary said" is a rousing anthem for bored newlyweds. the insanely catchy "heartworm (ooh ooh song)" - could easily become the summer hit `06, if i had more money to promote it! - contrasts danny tieman`s increasingly manic delivery with an urgent guitar, handclaps, and lisa cuomo`s harmonizing ooh oohs. four volts play up this contrast between abrasive lead vocals and calmer, almost cooing backing vocals, which enlivens "bedlam on the beat" and adds hefty tension to "she muddied the water". songs like "andy likes his gravy" and "i`m not a psyche-o-path" (16 seconds of insistently chanting the title) prove that four volts aren`t afraid of silliness in pursuit of searing lyrics and catchy choruses and later they pull a fast one and turn their gaze shoeward on late-in-the-album songs like "sunday night". over all a highly sympathetic indie-rock outfit admired by the likes of graham coxons, beck and calvin "k" johnson. the press called them a perfect blend of early pixies, freaked out blur and odd television personalities. who am i to deny! Higher ElevationsThe Protestant Work Ethic
the higher elevations are a swedish quartet on a german label, with a very british sound. the protestant work ethic is packed with melodic & power-driven songs, with a nod to the mod revivalist/post punk sound of the late 70s. it’s not all about the retro though: what they do is definitely their own, essentially due to singer niklas gustafsson’s unique voice; full of attitude and complimenting the energy created by his band. a definite winner.
